Alfred Pöll was born as the son of a medical doctor in 1867 in Salzburg Austria. As his father before him he studied medicin and became a doctor. He started his artistic career when he studied at the important Akademie der Bildenden Künste München (Academy of Fine Arts) in Munich one year after that. 1896 he moved to Linz in Upper Austria where he worked as a gynaecologist.

As an artist he was a member of the Oberösterreichischen Kunstvereins, from 1913 cofounder and chairman of the artist-group Der Ring and cofounder of the artist-group MAERZ in 1921. Internationally he is best known for his membership at the Secession in Vienna from 1913.

Alfred Poell starb 1929 in Gmunden.
